conservatives would hurt national security. that doesn't make it easy for some republican lawmakers like north carolina congressman. >> this is what the tea party wants to know. will you vote with mike lee to defund obama care? yes or no? i want yes or no. no. >> we need to show the american people we stand for conservative values. >> this guy has probably voted to get rid of obama care 20 times. i mean, they take the vote every week. >> 40 times. >> they voted 40 times. so you now have this happening all over america.

clinton to balance out what he calls puff pieces. now media matters joining calls for both networks to end the production of the special. you have kind of strange bed fellows making different arguments why these documentaries in one case and nbc entertainment film in another case should be put on the air. what is the media matters argument? >> the difference here is they haven't seen these films. they don't know what it is going to say. the media matters argument, david brock, a long time supporter of the clintons is saying it could hurt her reputation. he is worried that the response by cnn and nbc to all of this noise will be to overcompensate and do something critical of senator clinton, secretary clinton and give into the noise machine. he can ulcalling on them to

cancel it because he thinks they will be able to withstand it and it will be no puff piece. so they are arguing about something that doesn't exist. they don't know what it says. >> i feel like we have to get reince priebus on the show. the republicans have their own network that has a president that asks people to run for the party. until reince priebus is demanding fox do great pieces on democrats and documentaries i'm not sure it is completely a perfect argument. >> what about msnbc? >> what about it? look at our show. >> if you are talking primetime for both networks. >> if you are asking cnn to balance things out and you have a network that basically feeds your candidates and airs them and puts them on and hires them, i don't know. there is a whole other conversation that nobody is

having here. having said that i think they generated a really good conversation about the blurred lines. >> you bring up fox you have to bring up msnbc. in this case we disagree on the cnn front. for me and maybe i get in trouble here for speaking my mind. but for me cnn is what networks do, they do documentaries on big political figures. i don't see the cnn problem. if there is a problem it is actually more with nbc as far as if they do this flashy bio pick and it is a beautiful biography of hillary clinton that is a bigger problem. you and i and everybody on the set knows nbc entertainment and nbc news are completely separate. nbc news probably doesn't want

democratic national committee howard dean with us, as well. did you see the headline? >> louisiana shrinking? >> that might be -- >> obesity rates in young children dropping. that is really, really, really good news. a good start. perhaps we are seeing a trend in the right direction. sdwl that is good. >> what? >> i am very happy for the young children. >> want to get to politics? >> mitt romney adding his voice to a group of republicans warning the party against shutting down the government as a means to blocking obama care. the former presidential candidate said the plan led by conservative senators would hurt military families, senior citizens and national security. that doesn't make it easier for some lawmakers like north carolina congressman who they are facing angry voters back

home. >> this is what the tea party wants to know, will you vote with mike lee to defund obama care? yes or no? >> no. do you think harry reid is going to pass it in the senate. >> we need to show the american people we stand for conservative values. >> that's rough. >> first of all, he could have handled it better. i already voted to overturn it 40 times. i will vote to overturn it 40 more times if you like. >> that is a good point. so let's give him a second chance at answering the question. he would have said what? but you're supposed to make a point. >> the point is they voted to

overturn it 40 times. democratics control the senate. the democrats control the white house. and we don't -- we live in a constitutional republic. if you control the house of representatives that is great. now you have to control the white house and you can defund it. chuck todd, i have been talking about this for a couple of daze and of course there are people that aren't that smart out there that get really angry when i talk about it and tell the truth. i have been talking to a lot of really conservative house republicans -- of course, the senate republicans are really conservative. already out there tom coburn and others. scott walker, this is a stupid idea. house members, conservative house members that are just being left swinging by some strategy that for two guys that

are running fort ppresident of the united states is just to help them get donors and increase your mailing list. and it is really -- a lot of right wing congressmen. >> this is republican on republican crime. it is conservative on conservative. this is the sort of bizarreo version of august 2009 in what is going on here. you know, look, i think mike lee has -- the real issue here is mike lee clearly has a strategy, at least a campaign. he knows what he wants to say. ted cruz is on board and giving it more attention. instead of what i feel bad for these other house republicans who don't want to do this who think it is a bad idea their

leadership isn't leading here. they are not coming up with an alternative. they can sit here -- come up with an alternative that says we wish we can get rid of the president's health care plan but we can't. our goal is going to be to say delay the individual mandate. john boehner and eric cantor are letting cruz run things. >> if newt were speaker, somebody did this on the senate side mitt would say that is a stupid idea. he would provide cover for house members. so when they went home and newt would have even tougher talking points, then some republicans senator grand standing for a future presidential race. i guess since tom coburn who is

my favorite conservative senator and most people's conservative senator, scott walker who is the champion of conservatism they have all come out and shown leadership and said this is a stupid idea. it is going to hurt the republican party. i guess the real question is and you give it up, where is john boehner? >> playing golf with donald trump. >> where is canter. where is the republican house leadership? they need to come out and come out strongly and say we voted against obama care 40 times. people are posing in the senate because they want to run for president god bless them. i am not going to let them -- like you said, put our conservative guys with 95% or 100% ratings on the firing line. >> can i comment on this stuff?

>> i would like chuck todd first to answer. where is john boehner? why won't john boehner provide cover for his house members? >> this is the whole tail wagging the dog business. we have seen it in boehner numerous times when he said i really don't have an opinion on immigration reform of how this is going to do. this is going to be driven by the house conferences. at some point he has to sit there and try to lead on this. they will argue he tried to do this and it didn't work and almost cost him his speakership. i understand survival at some point. if you are the highest ranking elected republican in the country which john boehner is, second in line to the presidency, lead on this and be a counter weight to ted cruz. >> i would say he has cover from

charles krauthammer. he has cover from scott walker and cover from tom coburn. what is john boehner afraid of? >> you and i have played on donald trump's courses. we were trying to make a call. >> the water falls. >> they are too loud especially when you turn it on. howard dean, take it away. >> i think you guys are right to beat up on boehner. it is stunning at the number two -- the number one republican in the country stayed in the past on this. i think the republicans are doing themselves a favor and doing the country a favor. i think that pit ngeer gets a lot of credit for standing in front of a hostile audience saying no. we need more politicians in both parties willing to do that. secondly, i think the so-called

conservative movement, the people joe is talking about gets credit. this is something going on since the last election which is civil war in the republican party. and the more thoughtful conservatives are now winning that civil war. they are willing to stand up against the tea party forces that they themselves unleashed and took advantage of for two election cycles. this is good for the country and not just good for the republican party. you can't win if you are way on the extreme. you have to have a reasonable thoughtful approach to issues that may be very different than mine because i am a democratic. you have people who want to sit down and talk these things skpout come to a compromise. i see that now for the first time i think the people who are not crazy are getting the upperhand. i aagree it is very concerning and disheartening that boehner is taking a pass at all of this. >> you had people like tom coal say this is the political equivalent of a temper tantrum

and said it could cost republicans the house in 2014. what are the implications? is it going too far of attempting a government shut down. >> cole is one of the few members of congress who actually is a political campaign practitioner. he was a pollster before he became an elected official. of all the people saying these things to their fellow republicans he strikes me he ought to be one that others might want to listen to on this stuff. you know, it would change -- you give the democrats a way to nationalize the selection on their terms. you know, the president is dying to run against an either grid locked congress, do nothing congress. you would just hand him more of an issue than harry truman had in 1948. you are giving the democrats a way to just make this a

referendum on the republican party and republican control in the house of representatives if they do this. and it seems to me it is very high risk. and what is the reward? they are not going to be able to defund this. there is no reward other than getting as joe points out a larger database, i guess, of potential donors. >> the conservative really wants to know what is going on. there is no end game here. scott walker, tom coburn we don't support shutting down the government. it won't end obama care. it would end conservatives chances of winning in 2014. >> it is an endless repetition of einstein's definition of insanity. 40 votes. the largest story might be the

internal civil war within the republican party. >> two things about it that are interesting. one thing we learned about the government shut down stuff is whoever precipitates might be over. after a party loses the election they want to win the next one and they talk about a big tent and they try to come together. this party is in the middle of the civil war. obama has to be saying bring it on. >> earlier this week anthony weiner had a dramatic exchange with with an angry voter. and last night he came face to face with another candidate. the former congressman who was attending an event hosted by the aarp brushed off his 69-year-old rival by calling him, quote, grandpa. >> keep your hands off me. i heard what you said.

>> don't put your hands on me again. >> yeah, yeah i am. >> howard dean, i feel like, i do feel like the other candidates are trying to close in on him. >> don't call someone grandpa at an aarp event. >> this is an unbelievable campaign. this is a candidacy that is just imploding. it is a new york spectacle as only a spectacle in new york can be with new york post and daily news covering it. the "new york times" is not putting this kind of stuff on the front pages. there is a serious mayoral race with good candidates. anthony unfortunately is not one of them. i wish the race were taken more

seriously by the new york media because it is important. finally the rate of oobese aity among preschoolers is falling throughout much of the country. 18 states and the u.s. virgin islands saw a decrease in the numbers of obese kids from lower income families. only three states saw the rates go up. the data shows about one in eight preschoolers are obese in the united states. research shows heavy kids are more likely to be overweight as adults. michelle obama credited her let's move campaign for the drop writing we are making a difference in helping kids across the country. i think the increased awareness on many levels is helping. i mean, we are seeing even the food industry and the beverage industry, short steps but they are responding. >> people are talking about it.

>> and so is mayor bloomberg. >> mcdonald's, coca-cola. >> they are trying. >> putting the calorie counts on the menus is incredibly ininstructive. you are ordering something you think is healthy. >> my kids love mcdonald's. i can do a happy meal and they get apple slices and a quarter of the size of fries than what used to be in that thing. they can still do the mcdonald's. the portions, the apples. >> and the toys. >> they still get the toys. >> that is all that matters. >> and a little apple slice and extra fries. >> what the mayor tried to do here in new york city even though it was getting knocked down it started a conversation we have never seen before. >> coca-cola has been doing has been great, the advertisements. >> go to howard.

he is a doctor. >> publishing the calorie counts. >> we need to put sugar count, too. >> you ought to give some credit to the people fighting vending machines in the schools. i agree calorie counts is really powerful stuff. i hope we see that all over the country. americans can make smart choices if they know what is in the food. >> more physical ed classes. >> you know who gets big credit for physical ed, the president of spellman college in atlanta got rid of ncaa sports. they put in a physical fitness program for every student. that is unbelievable. she gets a lot of credit. >> i think we need to mainstream programs for people and was talking about this putting together the book who are dealing and struggling with obesity and morbid obesity.

it is very difficult to come back from that. it is a condition. it is an illness and we need to treat it like that. >> chuck todd, spellman college you know who else is from atlanta? coca-cola. what do you think about the johnny football stuff? >> that sounds like texas a&m and johnny football are not on the same page on how all of this is handled. it seems to me there is a bigger story. i don't know if you saw what he did and this basically indictment of the ncaa. they will punish johnny football. this is a kid who may not be getting the best advice. shouldn't be doing this stuff. the fact that the ncaa is going to punish him while also selling his jersey on ncaa.com and the website, the hypocrisy is sitting right there. this entire thing is about to

proxy for the economy anymore or a proxy for corporate profitability because companies are making more on earnings. >> so people look at the numbers on wall street and they are huge. they are struggling on main street. we have the jobs report last week, once again we are sputtering along. real income down. and yet they are making a ton of dough. >> household balance streets, credit card delinquencies. late mortgage payments are at the lowest in 20 or 30 years. if you are looking at stocks look at a chart of mastercard. it is on fire. it is a global stock. it is not just about u.s. consumers. there is a school of thought that eventually the house holds are repaired to the point where they start to spend. look at car sales this year. >> the bottom line is there is a lot of people not working right now and the number people look at is people giving up the job

search or household asurvey compared to what is created is the contrast and disconnect between main street and the market is a big deal. >> the president spoke a lot about income equality and it has been an important topic for lawmakers and policy makers. you look at the market growth and there is a disconnect between those with an education and those who have investments and those who don't. how do you reconcile that and how do we create a better connection. >> if the president is going to have a discussion about the wealth gap in this country he has to look at his own fed chairman who fed low rates. so if you are exposing the stock market you made money. if you are exposed to real estate you made money. if not you barely treaded water. so much is about not so much earnings or jobs but more about what the fed is going to do in

actually, that includes digital reading. the percentage of people who said they read a newspaper yesterday in print 23% at the moment. radio has fallen as much. television has fallen a little bit. you can see online as you would imagine has gone up very sharply. >> online has impacted radio and newspapers. >> and television. more people today who say that they got their news yesterday online than from newspapers or radio. >> people ask us how do you prepare for a show that starts at 6:00 a.m.? there is no preparing. you get news throughout the day. by the time i get the -- >> men only want two things. for men they want sex and

we are talking about kids age 2 to 4. we know once the kids are fat that they have a five times greater chance of becoming obese adults and then you run the risks of high pressure, diabetes, stroke. the real point is to intercede early. 18 states in the u.s. virgin islands have rolled that back. so i have to say it was a very optimistic report. >> let's talk about this. also in the news president george w bush, a guy that ran like a seven minute mile, a guy who has been -- i heard his pulse rate was like in the low 70s or something. this is always scary to me. you hear about the guys in their 50s that run marathons that their heart explodes and they are in perfect shape. what is going on here? how does a guy this healthy end up with a serious heart problem? >> i'm going to walk a very fine line here. all we do know is that the president was seen at the cooper

clinic and under went a stress test and there were abnormality as but was not having symptoms. they another test, to have a stent put in. the general guideline is that you should have a stent put in, if you're having symptoms. now, i recognize this is the president of the united states and perhaps they went ahead and treated him aggressively. but there are some cardiologists yesterday sort of hedging a little bit, saying, was this overtreatment or was there other things going on? the one thing i can say is we are a cumulative aggregation of the cheeseburgers we eat and the lifestyle we led when we were younger people so is the fact he had narrowing of arteries is not that big a surprise. >> women as well, think they're doing all the right things,

still have to constantly be concerned about their heart. >> well, that's why we have routine screening tests after the age of 50. a ct angiogram is not routine. but going in, getting on a treadmill, seeing how well your heart tolerates exercise, that's one thing. we do know you can reverse heart disease, especially in men, by a nonfat diet, exercising, not smoking. for a lot of people, being on statins. that's been proven. bill clinton is the poster child of having had a real cardiac scare, totally turning his lifestyle around and looking better than ever. >> what's the -- is it the stress test, that anybody that's concerned should take? >> yeah, really get on a treadmill with a lot of leads and your heart rate goes up and they watch your ekgs. when you're at your peak rate, you lie on a table very quickly

and an ultrasound of your heart can be done. it's noninvasion inand you can see how well the heart's pumping. a ct angiogram, not a screening test because, one, you'll absolutely find an abnormality and, two, there's a big radiation dose with that test. >> isn't it accurate to say the thallium stress test, where they inject the thallium dye into your heart? >> absolutely, the thallium stress test is one notch up where you get an injection of a radioactive tracer and they check out the injection fraction of your heart. it's the next step up, if they're concerned about heart function. >> you had bypass, right? >> yes. >> how long ago? >> 15 years ago. you eventually pay, joe, in your case, it was the '80s, the lost decade of the cheeseburgers. >> you say the lost decade, it was more like 40 pounds.

conservative enough for you? tom coburn, not conservative enough for you? scott walker, not conservative enough for you? how long does this madness continue? when do you realize that your stupidity is getting in the way of conservatives winning national elections? do you want to keep losing? you've lost a popular vote 5 out of 6 times in presidential races. to you want to lose the next five or six? do you really want hillary clinton to be present for the next eight years? do you really want her to pick four, five, six, seven eight supreme court justices along with barack obama over the next, what, 11 years? are you really that stupid? are you really that dumb? are you really in that much need? of being angry and resentful? that you just stop caring about winning elections. if so, you're not a republican.

it's been an unbelievably emotional few days for a well-known radio host who took to twitter to chronicle the passing of his mother. share a very private moment with a very public audience. it sparked wide-range reaction online. first, nbc's kevin tibbles has the back story. >> hi, i'm scott simon of npr.

>> reporter: for millions of listeners, scott simon is the saturday morning voice of national public radio. in recent days he's been at his mother's bedside at chicago's northwestern memorial hospital. >> looking -- i don't want to say death in the eye but looking life in the face. >> reporter: with her permission, he took to social media, tweeting updates to his 1.2 million followers. >> i love holding my mother's hand. haven't held it like this since i was 9. why did i stop? i thought it unmanly? what crap. >> reporter: simon's mother lost her battle with cancer. he previously interviewed her for the npr series story court. >> my name is pat lyons simon newman gil band. oh, boy, what a monogram that is. >> reporter: in her day, an unconventional mother, model and show girl who appeared at chicago's nightclub.

thrice married, once to scott's father, a comedian. >> if you say anything remotely fun funny, people say that's your dad talking. actually it was my mother. >> reporter: simon remembers a woman who never forgot a name and always sent a thank you note. reaction to his tweets has been overwhelming and mixed. is it weird to tweet from your mother's death bed? no, it's real and moving and lovely. thank you npr scott i'm be for sharing your love. some things are best left untweeted. i disagree with him tweeting during his mother's death. perhaps your mother's teaching us we shouldn't be so afraid of it? >> somewhere in everything my mother has said is there's a message. i am getting a life's lesson about grace from my mother in the icu. we never stopped learning from our mothers. >> reporter: a lifetime of memories and a painful process shared in such a public and

poetic way. >> beautiful woman. scott is with us now. when did you decide to do this? when did you first decide you were going to do this? >> i'm not sure i decided. you and i both have -- when did we decide to tweet about your salmon colored pants yesterday? you and i both keep active twitter accounts. when our family was on vacation in california, when i flew to her bedside in chicago, i certainly had no inkling -- i mean, she's 84. it's always in the back of your mind. i didn't expect it would become her death. i certainly hoped and prayed it wouldn't. i just found what she was saying so interesting. so reflective. when she looked up at one point and said, you know, baby, all those great death bed speeches, they had to have been written in advance. or the one that really chilled my heart is when she said, you know, people should spend more time talking to peep in their 80s because they've looked right across the street at death for more than a decade and they know what's really important in life.

i look, i don't mind -- mike barnicle's here. been one of america's great city columni columnists. i did a personal family memoir. i have an interesting family. you quote your family. you quote your spouse. you quote your children. i think the point is you make yourself the butt of jokes and you make them the heroes. and i think what my mother just said was so interesting. it struck me as the most interesting thing i had heard in months, if not years. i felt moved to share it. i didn't share clinical details, none of that stuff -- >> we've been talking about medium succeeding, failing. it struck me whenever i did radio whether i was being interviewed or whether i was being a host, through the years, it actually was the most -- for some reason, and ronald reagan got this early on.

for some reason, it was the most personal of all mediums. people are connected to you in a way. that may make more sense. >> that may account for some of the following. sitting here, i'm always glad to see you. i haven't given any of these larger issues a moment of thought. i've been with my mother. i've been with my family. i really haven't run it through. i don't know. probably won't. you're asked to philosophize about it. i don't really know. >> mike, as a columnist, you're required to give more of yourself than most. and i guess that's always a gut decision, isn't it? >> what i think is most interesting about it, whenever decisions we make, to tweet about or write about or whatever or speak about, is one universal application i think that is almost eternal. scott's tweets about his mother got to it. people, other people, whether they're readers, viewers or

listeners, they want to be touched. we live in such a remote world today. so hard to access emotionally. we don't know our neighbors. we move multiple times. we have multiple jobs. people want to be touched. they want to, oh, yeah, that's what it's like to be human. to lose your mom, you know, to live a life, to witness a life going through your fingers. i think that's the universal application that touched so many people in your tweets. >> as i said, i haven't given it much thought. i didn't really know till -- >> your mother was beautiful, by the way. >> my mother was beautiful, absolutely. she was an extraordinary beauty. just going through a tough and interesting and absolutely fascinating life that she had.

it's been great. the hard part obviously is going to come afterwards when you wake up and realize there's nothing -- there's nothing more to go through. it's all memories. over the past, look, coming here, i nearly picked up my phone to call her and say -- tell me what you think of -- as she usually did. >> we all have mopms. maybe we haven't talked to our mother enough. so even the people would accuse you of oversharing, i guarantee you they considered those issued in their own head. even though you haven't looked at it philosophically, you also had to be very aware you weren't being private about this. you knew that this was something you were giving to everyone. >> i did know that. i did become aware the scale of it. but, you know, maybe i'll get back to that point in my life

where i care about those other reactions. for the moment -- >> you're in mourning. >> for the moment, i don't. it also must be said i think at the same time it was never -- it was never on my mind that i was sharing the end of a life per se. it was always on my mind i was sharing an interesting and engaging life. that i hope, you know, one way or another goes on. >> in those last days when you were at her bedside in the hospital, did you learn anything about your mother that you didn't know before? >> oh, gosh, yes. some of it i think we can share. we were watching the movie "42" together. py wrote a book about jackie robinson. he said, leo derosher, he made a pass at me twice. once as a dodger, once as a cub. i'd never heard that story. there was a lot of stuff that i didn't share. and won't except maybe with my wife and one day my children. but yeah, i think it's, you know, look i believe it was gandhi. if it wasn't gandhi, it's going

all right, it's time for business before the bell with cnbc's kelly evans. what are thinking looks like in the follow-up of such turmoil in the media world? >> huge week already. >> i feel like we're going to look back, like summer of 2013 is the moment in which there's

been this media earthquake. it really feels like all of the changes which have been simmering have come to the fore. time warner may give a sense why they're striking such a hard note when it companies to bargaining with cbs. they earned 81 cents a share from 42 cents a year earlier. almost doubling their net income there. revenue was up 10% year on year and they also raised their full-year outlook. taking a look at another set of results just out. this is disney overnight. this gets back to something we've been talking about for a couple weeks, which is to say what's going to happen with hollywood and the studio modeful they can't deliver the hits to account for a lot of the marketing costs? so disney beating but their studio income lagged. they're going to take $160 million to $190 million loss in the fiscal fourth quarter because "lone ranger" just didn't perform in the box office. remember, last year, they took a 200 million charge for "john carter" so they have to continue

to deliver hits. >> mike, what are you laughing about? we got mike barnicle laughing at you. you laughing at johnny depp? >> you read those numbers, you just wonder in the hollywood studio model, did anybody look at this thing before they released it? it is awful. you now have hollywood studios largely made up of lawyers and accountants rather than peep who know a good story. >> and we had spike lee on set the other day actually talking about this. we said, why are you going to kick starter to raise money for your next project? he said it's as much about fund-raising as weakly t lbasicg to get people interested in good projects again. he blames the studios for not just this time around but 20 years for interfering with good quality work like a lot of the stuff happening on cable. >> you're laughing at johnny depps. sometimes it works, "pirates of the caribbean," sometimes it doesn't. kelly what do you make of this

washington post purchase yesterday? >> this is the third piece of it. we've been talking about disruption in television, talking about disruption in the movie studio business and of course disruption when it comes to the traditional newspaper business. the interesting thing about jeff beysos, i loved it in politico yesterday, saying it loses money, is he actually doing this as some sort of tax play because if you own a losing asset, you can write off the income and get a benefit for that. he has to be active at the "post" for something like i think it's ten hours a week to not get pinned basically with this provision that says you have to be actively involved in the business and not just in it for the tax benefit. so we assumed he was going to have some sort of active role any way. can he solve whatever it is that plagues them and make this a profitable enterprise?
